Colored Curb Zones

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation paints short segments of street curbs to prohibit or restrict parking on streets.

Red Curb Zones

Red curb zones indicate “no stopping, parking or standing” at the curb whether the vehicle is attended or unattended and are installed for public safety or traffic safety reasons. Only buses may stop in a red zone marked or posted as a bus loading zones. Red curbs are installed for safety reasons or to accommodate traffic flow in narrow lanes.

Greater length of red curbs are installed at marked adjacent to traffic signals, stop signs, yield signs and left-turn pocket lanes. Greater lengths of red curb are installed at marked crosswalks without traffic signals, along curved roadways and occasionally on approaches to stop signs or other warning signs where additional visibility of the sign is necessary

Red curb zones are also used to emphasize bans on parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. (Even without painted curbs, this restriction applies.)

Red curb zones are generally not installed adjacent to conventional driveways. Visibility and driveway operation might be improved, but the availability of LADOT maintenance and enforcement staff is limited. LADOT urges motorists to be cautious near driveways.

Yellow Curb Zones

Yellow curb zones are used in commercial districts where heavy freight loading is common. The zones may be used when actively loading or unloading freight, but for no longer than 30 minutes unless a personal parking meter is used. Passenger loading is also permitted in these zones for less than five minutes.

In the City of Los Angeles, yellow curb zones are effective 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Parking is permitted during non-restricted times.

White Curb Zones

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation reserves white curb zones for passenger loading. They are often found outside theaters, churches and restaurants with valets.

Passenger loading is limited to no longer than five minutes. White curb zones are effective 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

White curbs are also used at special passenger loading areas, such as taxicab zones, sightseeing areas and mailbox deposits.

Green Curb Zones

Green curb zones are for short-term parking at locations such as nursery schools, child care centers and convenience stores. Green curbs are installed where the normal turnover of on-street parking does not grant enough access to these properties.

Either 15- or 30-minute parking limits accompany green curbs, effective 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Parking is permitted during non-restricted times. Sometimes, short-term parking time limits are supplement with parking meters.

Blue Curb Zones

Blue curb zones reserve parking for the disabled. These zones are found nearby public buildings, cultural interest attractions and facilities serving the elderly or disabled. Under certain conditions, they may be installed at the home of a disabled resident.

These zones may be used by any disabled person who displays a valid disabled placard or license plate issued by a state department. Users must obey other higher order parking restrictions, such as “No Parking” or “No Stopping” restrictions.

Requests from the public for blue curbs are submitted to the Department of Disability, who do preliminary reviews and screening and are then forwarded to LADOT for final determination.
